I used to love going to Las Vegas. I loved the sleaziness, the pervasive feeling of sexuality and the idea that I could get rich if only lady luck was on my side. She never was but the aura was still powerful. If that Vegas is the one you have fond memories for then you will love "The Showgirl."
Is it great literature?
No.
But it is a rollicking good story of what Vegas used to be, seedy, sexy and sordid. Fischer must have spent a lot of time in Sin City researching his colourful cast of characters because they all ring true. They're all represented.
The card counters, the mobsters, the pathetic losers and of course, the showgirls.
Fischer's The Showgirl would be the perfect book to read on the plane as you jet toward Vegas with a wallet full of cash and a heart full of hope, or perhaps, even better, on the long ride home with nothing but bitter memories and a harsh reminder that the house always wins.
Either way I think you'll enjoy the Showgirl.
I know I did.
As much as I love the classics, I sometimes like a change of pace. The Showgirl novel provides that. It’s raw, spicy, full of plot twists with plenty of villains shaking things up. If you want a light entertaining book to binge read at the pool, airport or backyard, The Showgirl delivers.
This is one of those books you really do not want to stop reading. The story moves quickly with clever plot twists and the characters collide in unexpected ways. I’m tired of books that are slow because of over the top narratives. The Showgirl is suspenseful while getting straight to the point. I felt like I was reading a movie. If you are thinking about buying it, I highly recommend it.
A fun ride through Las Vegas.
The author has done a great job of capturing the feeling of a Vegas era that is now long gone. Relatable characters tell a story with many twists and turns, all leading to a nail biting finale.
The Showgirl is a perfect read for beside the pool or anytime you have a craving for a little Las Vegas magic.
Great story line. Easy read. Tough to put down. Highly recommend
Loved this book! It’s such a fun and surprising read! Nothing about it feels predictable, and it kept me hooked the whole way through. If you’re looking for something different and exciting, definitely give this one a try.
Enter into a time machine for those familiar with Las Vegas of the late 70's and early 80's. It seems like forever ago where Las Vegas has greasy spoon diners with $2 breakfast and $6 prime rib dinners. This steps back into that time where it was so easy to cross paths with fellow friends, or new gambling friends, making Vegas feel small. The book starts out fast and never lets up. The author does an amazing job building all the characters as the story unfolds, and blending them together in ways that would never be expected. Equally so a great trip down memory lane with all the memorable casinos of the day. This novel was so exceptional I wish I took notes to recall all the intricate weaving of the storyline. And for those that aren't quite the experienced gambler, a few lessons on gambling, which is amazingly crafted into use in the story in ways you would never expect. Trust me, it all comes together into one fantastic piece of artistic writing. Truly a must read. Only one question, when can we see this on the big screen?
I really enjoyed The Showgirl. The story moves fast, is full of Vegas insight, has heart and enough danger to keep you glued to the book. I especially enjoyed the comic relief the author threw in with the German Yoga enthusiast Donna. The Tree Pose will never be the same. I think The Showgirl will thoroughly entertain you as your next read.
